Description |
This is a blacksmith made wrought iron froe blade. |
Notes |
A froe's wedge-shaped blade was struck on the top edge by a crude wooden maul, after being positioned parallel with the end grain of a sawn log. The driven blade was then rived back and forth until a shingle, rough clapboard, tool handle, chair leg, barrel stave, or other rough unit was produced. Although factory made froes were available, many were made by farmers or local blacksmiths. |
