Description |
This political coloring book has a red cardstock cover featuring a white caricature of a smiling Jimmy Carter surrounded by a halo of blue and white stars. On the cover in white text is printed "THE OFFICIAL / JIMMY CARTER / COLORING BOOK." Underneath in black ink is printed, "1976 Convention Issue." In the upper right hand corner of the front cover is a small price in black ink, "$1.93." The interior of the book has coloring pages and caricatures lampooning Carter and other political figures. Each page has a caption at the bottom which tells the reader what color to use for each drawing. The back cover features a winding white road with a blue background above and a red background below the road. On the road are small figures outlined in black carrying signs which say "Carter." Leading this line of figures down the road is a peanut-like figure in a straw hat with a halo above its head that represents Jimmy Carter. This peanut figure carries a sign which reads "TRUST / ME." A white box to the right of the peanut, in the red background, contains text that reads, "This cover was allocated for / Senator Jackson. Unfortunately, / Scoop turned out to be colorless." The coloring book is bound together with two metal staples. |
Notes |
Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter won the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination and defeated Republican Gerald Ford in the fall. This coloring book is neither pro-Carter nor anti-Carter but seems to be satirizing politicians in general and focuses heavily on issues of race in politics. Political figures represented in the book include Hubert Humphrey, Dick Daley, Lester Maddox, George Wallace, John Glenn and Ted Kennedy. This object was donated on December 5, 1997 by Drexell R. Davis. Davis, a self-described "Yellow Dog" Democrat, held several elected positions in the Kentucky state government. His thirty-three years of public service prompted his interest in collecting political memorabilia. |
