This is page 219 from a book entitled "Religious Denominations of the United States" that was published in 1855. The page shows a wood engraving of a gothic revival style church with a large spire jutting into the cloudy sky above. The image is labeled, "Walnut Street Baptist Church Louisville, KY." Below the image is the following paragraph: "This beautiful edifice erected for the Walnut Street Baptist Church, Louisville, Kentucky, is situated in a central and commanding situation. Its architecture is Gothic, the dimensions are one hundred and twenty feet by sixty-four, and it has a spire two hundred and forty feet high. Including the ground on which it stands, its cost was nearly ninety thousand dollars. Its pulpit is at present very ably filled by the Rev. W. W. Everts, from New York." The artist has his signature in the lower right corner and reads, "J. Spittall." |
