Description |
This Henry Mosler drawing is captioned "Pontoon bridge across the Licking River." It is a pencil sketch of a bridge over a river. A cavalryman rides across the bridge in the foreground and three or four men stand near the right hand bank holding rifles with fixed bayonets. There are three men are on the opposite side of the bridge. A man swims in the river in lower left. There are trees and a road in middle background. Located near the center of the drawing, there is a tree that has fallen down and it appears that there is an abstract rendering of a group of soldier on foot with riles standing in front of the fallen tree. Downstream, there are two houses or structures visible on the right hand side. A hand written note at top says "Put in more men." |
Notes |
See item UNNUMBERED-2532 for the published version of this original sketch. In the published version if this original sketch, Mosler did indeed "put in more men" and add a column of infantry crossing the bridge. Born in New York, Henry Mosler was trained in Cincinnati, Ohio; Dusseldorf, Germany; and Paris, France. He lived in Munich and Paris later in life. He was a correspondent for Harper's Weekly during the Civil War, and submitted almost 40 etchings for publication, illustrating battles and other war scenes. |
