Description |
This is a World War I German military belt buckle. It is a rectangular, stamped, brass buckle with a D-ring soldered to the back. It has two prongs on a moveable shaft for attaching to a leather belt. The design is in tin or some very light-weight, very bright metal that resembles silver but has no tarnish. The buckle has a circular design in the center that has a raised crown centered over a wreath. The inscription at the top reads: GOTT MIT UNS (God With Us). |

William S. Stovall (1922-1998) was an Army Ranger from Lexington who enlisted in February 1941 after a year with the KNG. He fought in North Africa, Italy, and across Europe, receiving the silver star, purple heart, and good conduct medal. He became a master sergeant in 1949 and was discharged. Called back to service as a reservist, he was promoted to 1st Lt. during the Korean War in March 1951. He was promoted to Captain in 1956 and retired in 1961. He was an avid collector of souvenirs from his service. Worn by Imperial German Army officer's or NCO's through WWI. The crown became an eagle during WWII. |
