Description |
This is a State of Georgia 20 dollar note, April 6, 1864 issue, plate A, in black ink on beige paper. The serial number is 3705. It is located right side at center and is hand written in ink. The central image is a detailed lithograph featuring Moneta on the left side leaning on a treasury box. At center is the three columns of the seal of the State of Georgia behind a fence. On the right is a sheaf of wheat, vegetables and two sheep. Both short ends have a vertical diamond pattered rectangle with, from top to bottom, the number "20" in white, the Roman numeral "XX" with flourishes, and the number "20" in black. On the top edge "Milledgeville," is inscribed left of center and "April 6th 1864" right of center. Above and below the central image is inscribed in a variety of fonts "THE STATE OF GEORGIA / WILL PAY THE BEARER TWENTY DOLLARS AT HER TREASURY / on the 25th day of December next, in Confederate Treasury notes / issued after the 1st of April 1864, if presented within three months / after maturity, otherwise not redeemable except in payment of Public Dues." Below this are the signatures for the comptroller general and treasurer." Between the signatures is a star burst with "REGISTERED" around it. The maker's mark is on the bottom edge right "HOWELL, ENGR." A green treasury stamp is located over the right side of the central image. It is illegible, but should read "TREASURY OF GEORGIA / 1862." The reverse is blank. |
Notes |
Moneta was the protectress of funds. Money in ancient Rome was coined in her temple. The word "moneta" is where we get the word "money." |
