Notes |
Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) served as the 12th President of the United States from 1849-1850. Taylor was born into a prominent family of plantation owners who moved to Louisville from Virginia in his youth. Taylor joined the army in 1808, receiving a commission as a first lieutenant in the Kentuckian Seventh Infantry Regiment. Taylor went on to fight during the War of 1812 and during the Mexican American War. A noted on file indicates this portrait was painted shortly after the Battle of Buena Vista in 1847. |
