Notes |
This is the bed in which John Larue Helm was sworn in as governor and in which he died five days later. Helm served two brief terms as governor of Kentucky. Elected lieutenant governor in 1848, Helm became governor in 1850 when John J. Crittenden resigned to serve in the cabinet of President Millard Fillmore. In 1867 Helm was elected governor but died five days after assuming office. He had gotten sick during the campaign and the oath of office was administered while he was bedridden. |
