Notes |
This frock coat was worn by Captain Charlton Hunt "Charley" Morgan (1839-1912), CSA, during the Civil War. Born in Kentucky, Morgan graduated from Transylvania University in Lexington. Serving as U.S. Consul to Messina, Italy, at the start of the war, Morgan returned to join the Confederacy as an aide to Col. Robert Trabue who commanded the Kentucky "Orphan Brigade." Wounded at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862, he was captured in Alabama where he was recovering. He was captured again during "Morgan's raid," led by his brother John Hunt Morgan. Donated by a Nellie Morgan, believed to be Charlton's daugther, Ellen Key Howard Morgan. |
