Description |
This is a khaki Women's Army Corps (WAC) uniform blouse. It is made of khaki cotton twill fabric. It is machine-stitched with tan cotton thread. The shirt has two pairs of darts on the front of the blouse with each pair located on either side of the button up closure. The blouse has five tan circular buttons. The blouse features square front chest pockets with pleats and flat button down flaps. The collar is turned down and pointed, and the yoke is gathered at the front. The back of the shirt has four darts and two pleats along the top seam. There is a button closure at each cuff. The proper left sleeve has a World War II Army Service Forces patch near the shoulder. The shirt has a cloth tag that reads, "SPORTWEAR / WAAC QUEEN / by Queen / DES MOINES, IOWA." The owner's surname is inscribed above the tag: "HORLACHER." There is a white cloth tag on the inside of the front flap of the shirt that has blue text that reads "DRY CLEAN ONLY / DO NOT WASH." |

Helen H. Horlacher from Lexington, Ky., was commissioned in one of the first class of officers of the United States Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) on Sept. 12, 1942. The WAAC became an official part of the United States Army on Sept. 1, 1943 and designated as the Women's Army Corps (WAC). Ms. Horlacher served for four years in Europe and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign. |
