Notes |
These stuffed donkey and elephant toys were produced by the toy company Applause for the 1984 GOP and Democratic Conventions. Applause was a comapny which found great success in the 1980s when they began producing stuffed toys and figurines. The company was founded in 1966 and was in business until 2004. The toys were sold at their respective conventions which were held in the summer of 1984. The Republic National Convention was held in August 1984 in Texas, with Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush being nominated for re-election. The Democratic National Convention was held in July 1984 in California, with Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro nominated. The 1984 democratic convention was chaired by then Kentucky governor, Martha Layne Collins. The toys were donated to the Kentucky Historical Society in 1988 by former Kentucky State Treasurer and Secretary of State, Drexell R. Davis (1921-2009). Davis, a Kentucky native, held many political positions during his decades long career. |
