Notes |
This item belonged to Thomas M. (Mason) High. High was born in Pennsylvania on March 26, 1824. At some point he moved to Jericho, Henry County, Kentucky. The 1870 census lists him as head of household in Henry County and his occupation as carpenter. Family tradition holds that High assisted in the construction of the Old State Capitol. This is unlikely because of his age. It is possible, however, that he was contracted to do work at the Capitol since he was a carpenter living in an adjacent county. High was a veteran of the Civil War. He served as a private in Company I of the 13th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. He entered service on October 25, 1861 and was mustered on December 31, 1861. He was in a hospital in Lexington when the regiment mustered out on January 12, 1865. A gravestone request submitted by Mrs. T.D. Mitchell of Junction City, Boyle County, Kentucky in 1932, lists Thomas High's date of death as March 8th, 1878. According to the request, he was buried at the Hendrensville Cemetery in Henry County. Records of that cemetery do not show a Thomas High buried there. The gravestone is currently located at the Old Mount Freeman Cemetery, Boyle County, Kentucky. |
