Description |
This is a World War II German Army Panzer Assault Badge, or Tank Combat Badge. It is a light weight metal with a gold color, perhaps meant to represent brass. The badge is an oval wreath of five oak leaves on the left side and four oak leaves on the right side. The Wehrmacht eagle clutching a swastika in its talons is at the top of the wreath. A Panzerkampfwagen (a German tank) passes through the wreath from left to right, with the front tread rolling through the oak leaves on the right side. There is a metal pin clasp on the back of the badge. |
Notes |
William S. Stovall (1922-1998) was an Army Ranger from Lexington who enlisted in February 1941 after a year with the KNG. He fought in North Africa, Italy, and across Europe, receiving the silver star, purple heart, and good conduct medal. He became a master sergeant in 1949 and was discharged. Called back to service as a reservist, he was promoted to 1st Lt. during the Korean War in March 1951. He was promoted to Captain in 1956 and retired in 1961. He was an avid collector of souvenirs from his service. This badge was worn by members of the German armor who fought in 3 assaults on 3 days. In German "Panzerkampfabzeichen" "FOR FURHRER AND FATHERLAND" LTC JOHN R. ANGLIN, PG. 85. |
