Notes |
Samuel Redd Bullock (1817-1849) was born in either Fayette or Clark County to Maria Burch and Waller Bullock. Samuel married Eliza Overton Whitney in Fayette County in 1841. He graduted from Centre College in 1838 and practiced law in Lexington. He worked as partner at Bullock & Breckinridge with John Cabell Breckinridge, future vice president of the United States, on North Upper Street. Samuel died during a cholera epidemic in 1849 in which over 342 Lexingtonians died within two months. The couple had three sons. The donor, Norvell Bullock Baugeard, was Samuel's great-granddaughter. Ellen Norvell Bullock, the wife of Samuel's grandson, Samuel Archibald Bullock, attributed this painting to Oliver Frazer (1808-1864). Frazer studied under Matthew Harris Jouett and Thomas Sully in Philadelphia. After study in Europe, he opened a studio in Lexington in the 1830s. He painted portraits of notable Kentuckians, and his portrait of Henry Clay is part of the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. |
