Description |
This is a State of Georgia ten dollar note, February 1, 1863 issue, plate A, in black ink on beige paper. The serial number is 24149. It is located right the central image and is hand written in ink. On the left edge is an image of Ceres over a patterned rectangle with the word "TEN" in it. On the top edge is inscribed "Milledgeville, Ga." on the left and "February 1st 1863" on the right. Below these are the plate letters and a circle with the profile of Athena the number "10" in it. Around the left circle is inscribed "RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF ALL DUES TO THE STATE." Around the right circle is "AND TO THE WESTERN & ATLANTIC RAIL ROAD." Between these is the Georgia state seal (which features three columns) with a snake wrapped around it. Below these is inscribed in a variety of fonts "THE STATE OF GEORGIA / Will pay bearer TEN DOLLARS in Specie or / six per cent Bonds of this state, six months after a Treaty of peace shall have been rati-/fied between the United States and the Confederate States." A red treasury stamp is located between the state seal and the signatures for the comptroller general and treasurer which is found at the bottom. Between the signatures is the Georgia state seal (which features three columns) with a ribbon below that is inscribed "REGISTERED." On the right edge is a vertical stripe with a pattern, the number "10" at top and bottom and an image of Minerva in an oval frame at center." The maker's mark is on the bottom edge "HOWELL, SAVANNAH." The reverse is blank. |
