Description |
This piece is a Christmas decoration scene in a corked bottle. The blue green bottle is mid-nineteenth century, hand blown, with a pontil, applied lip, and no mold seam. The piece inside has an arched altar guarded by two figures that appear to be soldiers. The arches are painted with black and white stripes with lamps at the top. There are palm trees on the four corners of the central pedestal. The central piece is a cross with silver leaves applied. The top of the cross has a ribbon that reads "INRI." Behind the cross is a ladder and spear. |
Notes |
The "Elizabeth Johnson Flood Memorial Collection" of bottles was given to the KHS by Catherine Flood, sister-in-law of Elizabeth Johnson Flood, the collector, who passed away in 1958. Elizabeth was the Librarian at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, resident of Chicago, wife of J. Maurice Flood, and Kentucky native. She occasionally lectured before club groups on the subject of her bottle collection and was featured in "Hobbies" magazine. |
