Notes |
William S. Stovall (1922-1998) was an Army Ranger from Lexington who enlisted in February 1941 after a year with the KNG. He fought in North Africa, Italy, and across Europe, receiving the silver star, purple heart, and good conduct medal. He became a master sergeant in 1949 and was discharged. Called back to service as a reservist, he was promoted to 1st Lt. during the Korean War in March 1951. He was promoted to Captain in 1956 and retired in 1961. He was an avid collector of souvenirs from his service. This medal was given to sailors of the submarine or U-boat service who participated in at least two sorties against the enemy.
