Notes |
This pin belonged to the superintendent of the Babies Health Contest at the Kentucky State Fair. The babies health contest was a pageant that allowed for the education of mothers in the welfare of their infants. The contest was started in 1913 in which babies between twelve and thirty-six months were scored based on an examination by a physician. The babies were given a head to foot exam (eye, ear, throat, lung, brain and general practice), and the mothers were given the opportunity to learn how to best care for their babies. The educational intent was to lower infant death rates, especially in rural areas. More information on the Kentucky State Fair contest can be found at: http://name.kdl.kyvl.org/haf1918081401_sn84037890 under "page 2." Information on the similar Indiana Babies Health Contest and its long term context in Indiana's welfare and sterilization act can be found at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3222231. Mrs. John L. Woodbury supervised the Babies Health Contest since its beginnings in 1913. She was a Kentucky Democrat and in 1928 served as an Alternate delegate for Kentucky to the Democratic National Convention. She was instrumental to the Democratic Women's Club of Kentucky and composed their Democratic Creed. |
