This is a State of Louisiana twenty dollar note, March 10, 1863 issue, plate F, in black ink with red overprint on the obverse and blue ink on the reverse, printed on beige paper. The serial number is 926. It is located right of the central image. The note has a border of a thin line then a black border with "RECEIVABLE FOR SALES OF ALL PUBLIC LANDS AND FOR ALL PUBLIC DUES" is on the left edge. "TWELVE MONTHS AFTER A DEFINITIVE TREATY OF PEACE BETWEEN THE CONFEDERATE AND THE UNITED STATES" is in the border on the top. On the right edge is "RECEIVABLE FOR STATE PARISH AND MUNICIPAL TAXES." On the bottom edge border, "FOR AUDITOR" is on the left, "B. DUNCAN, COLUMBIA S.C." at center and "FOR TREASURER" on the right. The central image is a bust portrait of P.G.T. Beauregard. Surrounding the image is inscribed in a variety of fonts, "THE STATE OF LOUISIANA / WILL PAY TO BEARER AT THE TREASURERS OFFICE / TWENTY DOLLARS." To the right of the last word is the serial number. Below this is "Shreveport, March 10th, 1863." Below that are the signatures for the auditor and treasurer. In the lower right corner is an image of a man dressed in animal hides. The red overprint includes a vertical rectangle on the left side with the word "TWENTY" in it and an oval in the upper right corner with the number "20" in it. The reverse is printed with an oblong decoration. I has a patterned horizontal oval in the center with the number "20" in it. To each side is first a patterned circle then a patterned oval. All five shapes are surrounded by detailed flouishes and shading. The design was intended to be centered, but is actually high and to the right. Below this, is hand written in pencil "Genl. Pierre Beauregard." In the upper right corner is "Ky." |
