|
This quilt known as the "Coming Home: Kentucky Women Quilt" contains the names of 220 Kentucky women which also includes five Native American cultures, and three women's religious congregations. This quilt was inspired by Victorian Era crazy quilts. The quilt is made up of 9 square-shaped sections. At the center or close to section corners are gloves or handprints. The 220 names are stamped with acrylic paint on fabric strips used to make up and define each section. It has a 1.5" wide border of green fabric with black with white diamonds. The backing is also made of this fabric. The interior of the quilt is constructed of various colors, shapes and types of fabric. The quilter outlined names and edges of the quilt in red, pink, purple, green, blue and yellow thread making Xs and running stitches. The quilt is machine pieced and embellished with beads, buttons, paint, gloves, and neck ties. Embellishments were completed by hand. Buttons outline the perimeter of the quilt and also fill sections. The beadwork was also inspired by the crazy quilt style. There is a yellow commemorative ribbon a long one of the edges that says, "BOONE COUNTY / SALUTES / 1792 - 1992 / KENTUCKY / VOLUNTEER". On the reverse, is stamped, "COMING HOME: / KENTUCKY WOMEN / QUILT / BY / JANE BURCH COCHRAN / ASSISTED BY / MICHELLE LUSTENBERG". There is also a sewn on label from Visions: QuiltArt at Quilt San Diego November 1996-January 1997.
