Notes |
The artist W.M. J. Fuqua (1839-1901) was self-taught and began painting in Bourbon Co. in 1855. According to donor the family initially had three portraits painted of this woman that were identical. She is believed to be a central Calk family member, possibly Elizabeth Keas Calk. The paintings in this donation belonged to the Calk family of Mt. Sterling. They were preserved in the family homestead, which was built in the late 1700s. The home was owned by the family for over 200 years and was sold in 2008 by the surviving heir and donor. |
