Description |
The watercolor depicts a morning or evening scene along the edge of a pond or creek (leading into a pond). The foreground has the pond in the lower right corner with the creek in the center with a tree on the bank in the left foreground corner. A hill rises from the banks of the pond and stream in the middle ground. The hill is covered in dark green foliage with areas of blue and scattered color. On the hill are hidden two structures. One is located in the center and has light emanating from its windows, the reflections can be seen in the water below. The other building is located to the right upper center. There is a worn picket fence hidden in the shrubbery in front of this building. The painting is signed in the lower right hand corner with 'Sawyier' misspelled ['Sauier']. Framed and double matted. |
Notes |
According to Bill Coffey of the Paul Sawyier Galleries, this painting would have been made early in Sawyier's New York period. The artist was changing his signature at the time and there are several versions of it used in paintings. |
