Description |
This is an unsigned Paul Sawyier watercolor on heavy stock paper. The impressionistic scene depicts the Kentucky River and bluffs below Frankfort, Kentucky. The foreground shows the river. In the center (on the river) are a houseboat and tugboat (?) [possibly Paul Sawyier's home after the death of his parents]. To the left of the boats are bushes and trees along the bank. The background, the upper left and upper center sections of the painting, show the Frankfort wharf with boats, the bluffs topped by the Frankfort cemetery and the Old State Arsenal. The arsenal is a white painted gothic building with a flag between the center turrets. On the left edge, to the left of the immediate left of the arsenal, is a partial red barn-like structure. |
Notes |
The painting was owned by Mary Thomas 'Mayme' Bull. It was possibly a gift from Paul Sawyier. |
