Description |
This is a Bank of Kentucky, Newport Safety Fund one dollar note, February 2, 1854 issue, plate A, in black ink and gray overprint on beige paper. The serial number is 7583. It is located left of the central image. In the upper left corner is the bust portrait of an unknown man in side an oval frame. In the lower left corner is the image of Commerce sitting on a plow, with a sheaf of wheat, and vegetables. A bridge with train on it is in the background. The central image is three working men standing together as if talking. On the one on the left seems to be holding the long handle of a tool. The one on the right has a leather apron on. Above this image is inscribed in white letters with black outline "THE NEWPORT SAFETY FUND." To the left of the central image is the serial number and to the right is the plate letter. Below the central image is inscribed in a variety of fonts "BANK OF KENTUCKY / Will pay ONE DOLLAR on demand / to the bearer, Newport, Feby 2nd, 1854." Printed under this in gray overprint is the word "ONE." Below this is the signature of the cashier. In the upper right corner is a patterned circle with a scalloped edge and the number "1" in it. IN the lower right corner is the image of Navigation and another woman behind her. In the background is a body of water with a small and a large ship on it. A red stamp of the letter "G" with a thin circle around it is located on the right between the patterned circle and the central image. The makers mark is on the bottom edge, center "Danforth Bald, & Co. Cincinnati." The reverse is blank. |

The man featured on this note may be the president of the Bank of Kentucky in Newport since he is featured on all of the notes printed by the bank ($1, 2, 3, 5, 10). The bank dissolved on Oct. 17, 1854. |
