Notes |
According to family tradition, this small painting was made by Joel Tanner Hart (1810-1877) as a boy of 5-6 in Clark County, Kentucky. Hart was born in Clark County, the son of Josiah and Judith Hart. He was a stonecutter in Bourbon County who began carving sandstone sculptures for friends. In 1835 he moved to Lexington where he began carving funerary works. His later commissions led him to Italy where he lived the rest of his life. The donor was Lula Bishop Weaver Mitchell (1879-1956), Hart's great niece. Her father, Dr. Robert D. Weaver was the son of John D. and Mary Morgan Hart Weaver. Her husband Strother D. Mitchell was president of the Kentucky Growers Insurance Company. |
