Description |
This housewife, or sewing kit, has a brown cotton exterior and a gray and white striped cotton interior. The interior has a series of green leaves embroidered on the fabric and an embroidered diamond pattern that has worn away in areas. A green cloth tape as a border along the edges of the piece wrapping around the interior and the exterior. There are two ties of cotton twill tape sewn to the exterior of the pointed end for closure. Two pieces of scrap fabric are sewn on to the interior for patches and three needles and black thread are attached to the interior. The piece has two interior pockets. |

A handwritten note from the daughter of John B. Sutton says: "This purse and these two 'sewing kits' were carried by my father, John B. Sutton in Company 'F.,' Ninth Kentucky Cavalry, a Private. He joined this company September 15; 1862 in Bath County, Ky. He was one of Gen. Morgan's..." [Letter is broken off.] |
