Notes |
Part of a set consisting of a water pitcher, two beakers, and a tray (1904.25.1-.4) From the National Historical Society, the 1881 date on the beaker may signify a formal dedication held at the Kentucky Historical Society on June 7, 1881. Governor Luke P. Blackburn, a charter member and KHS president, officially presented room keys to the society, and new librarian Cornelia Bush entered her role. This was not the first, or last, attempt to incorporate the society. June 7, 1881 was the 112th anniversary of the day Daniel Boone recorded he first saw "the beautiful level of Kentucke," The celebration on this day marked the society's tradition of meeting and commemorating what became known as "Boone Day" on or near June 7. Today, this date is celebrated as Kentucky History Day by the Society. Information taken from "A Glorious Birthright to Guard": A History of the Kentucky Historical Society by Thomas E. Stephens as published in The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, Winter/Spring 2003, Vol. 101, No. 1/2. |
