Description |
This is a State of North Carolina twenty dollar note, January 1, 1863 issue, plate C. It is printed in black ink with a red overprint on beige paper. The serial number is 685. It is hand written in ink and is located near the bottom on the left. The central image is a bust portrait of Zebulon Vance in an oval frame. The frame is surrounded by flags with a drum and riffle on the left and wheat and tools on the right. The right end has a vertical patterned rectangle with the word "Twenty" in it. On the inner edge of the rectangle is inscribed "Fundable in Six per cent Coupon bonds of the State after 1st Jany. 1866." Surrounding the central image is inscribed in a variety of fonts"ISSUED UNDER ACT RATIFIED / 20th Decr. 1862. / THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA / Raleigh / 1st Jany. 1863. / WILL PAY TO BEARER / TWENTY DOLLARS / Redeemable at the Treasury on or before the / FIRST DAY OF JANUARY 1866." Printed over the inscription located below the central image in red ink is the word "TWENTY." At the bottom are the signatures for the comptroller and the treasurer. On the right end, in the upper corner is a patterned oval with the number "20" in it. In the lower corner is an image of a bee hive and bees. On the inner edge of this section is inscribed "Receivable in payment of all public dues." The maker's mark is in the lower right corner "Engd. & Lithod. by J.T. Paterson & Co. Augusta, Ga." The reverse is blank. |

Zebulon Vance served as governor of North Carolina; September 8, 1862 – May 29, 1865 and January 1, 1877 – February 5, 1879. The bee hive represents industry and is a symbol for the Masons. |
