Notes |
John Velazquez moved to the United States in 1990 from Puerto Rico to start his jockey career. As of 2023, he has won 6,562 career races. In addition to Medina Spirit, he has also finished first in the Kentucky Derby in 2011, 2017, and 2020. Medina Spirit was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who finished first in the 2021 Kentucky Derby. He was owned by Zedan Racing Stables, trained by Bob Baffert, and riden by jockey John Velazquez. One week after the Derby was run, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission found an illegal substance, betamethasone, in Medina Spirit's system after a post-race test. After a series of tests and lawsuits, on February 21, 2022, Medina Spirit was disqualifed and stripped of his first place win at the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Trainer Bob Baffert was suspended from entering horses at Churchill Downs through 2024. Medina Spirit died on December 6, 2021, after a workout at Santa Anita Park. |
