Description |
This is a painting of Carpenter's Hall. The sky is cloudy with sections of blue sky showing through. The painting features a two story red brick building in the center. It has a white lantern or cupola. There is an American flag on the roof near the front. There are three rounded arched windows on the main section of the building on the second floor. The side sections of the buildings have rectangular windows with a keystone on the second floor. Under the second floor windows of the main section of the building there is a balustrade with spindles under the windows. The front of the building has a triangular pediment. The first floor windows have solid shutters and the front door has a neo-classical surround with a triangular pediment and arched doorway. There are lamps on each side of the steps of the building. There is a man in colonial dress coming down the steps. There are two men talking on the right side of the building. Their backs are to the viewer. There is a stand of trees to the right of the building. There are two white objects-possibly statuary on the right side of the building as well. There are trees on the left of the building with a single tree closer to the front of the painting. Near this tree is a man on horseback wearing what looks like a military uniform. He is facing the viewer. There are two men on the ground facing the rider with their backs to the viewer. In front of the building in the forefront is a circular patch of grass with tall plants. It is surrounded by a dirt drive or road. The signature of the artist is in the lower right corner: F.D. Briscoe, 1892. |
