Description |
This is a wooden rocking chair with a wooden seat and back made of wooden strips. The seat and back are woven in a herringbone twill pattern. Each reed strips measures around .75" wide. On the seat, the woven pattern extends around the front and side rails, and it then wraps around another set of rails located about three inches below the top seat rails. The woven pattern continues on below the set. On the back of the chair, the woven pattern extends around the lower rail, two spindles, and an area cut out horizontally into the top rail. The top rail has rounded sides that connect into the uprights on either side of the chair back. The uprights have simple turned detail at the top, and each is finished with an elongated finial. The arm rests are narrow near the back of the chair and gradually widen towards the front. The legs are round and each has a straight line detail carved around the leg located at the seat and by the stretchers. The legs taper in near the feet, which are set into the rocking chair runners. |
Notes |
Greenberry Turner (April 28, 1906 - August 12, 2000) was the son of Civil War veteran Jesse Turner. Greenberry was born when his father was 79 years old and was raised by his older siblings after his father died. Greenberry started working at his first job at 14 years old which was operating the water pump at a mine. He then worked as a carpenter and doing a series of odd jobs until he got a position as a postal carrier. He delivered mail on horseback through the 1940s and 1950s and retired in 1963. After retiring from the postal service he began making rocking chairs to supplement his retirement income. The family said that this is the oldest one that they still had in the family's possession at the time of donation. The seat on this chair was replaced by Greenberry Turner in the 1980s. |
