Description |
This is a madder red and indigo blue wool and natural cotton overshot coverlet done in the "Catalpa Flowers" pattern. The top and bottom are hemmed and the sides have selvedge edges. The piece is formed from three panels hand-sewn together vertically. The patterns are not fitted together to match. The bottom half of the left panel shows minor design changes such as two horizontal madder lines in places rather than three and the colors are lighter-- possibly indicating the use of less thread. A muslin backing with sleeve has been attached to the coverlet. |
Notes |
Mary Jane Parker Bristow (1841-1921) made this coverlet in Harrison County, KY. She married Walter Bristow on September 26, 1861. The coverlet passed to her daughter, then her granddaughter, then to the donor, her great granddaughter. In Kentucky this pattern is often known as "Gentleman's Fancy" or "Lady's Fancy." |
