Notes |
Randy Atcher, the singing cowboy, was on a WHAS-TV children's program for nearly 20 years. Atcher was the lovable cowboy star of ''T-Bar-V Ranch Time,'' which aired from 1951 to 1970. Atcher was also a fixture on ''Hayloft Hoedown,'' another show he did on WHAS during the same time period. He was likely the most revered and remembered local TV show in Louisville history. T-Bar-V featured Atcher, with his 10-gallon hat and guitar, and his sidekick, the late Tom "Cactus" Brooks. Some of Atcher's best known songs were "Happy, Happy Birthday," "Get Yourself a Savings Bank" and the "T-Bar-V" theme, which encouraged kids to "brush your teeth each morning, get lots of sleep at night." Atcher was born in 1918 in Tip Top, Ky., in Magoffin County. His family formed a group, The Atcher Family, that appeared on WHAS radio in the early 1930s, and he and his older brother, Bob, sang western songs on WBBM, the NBC station in Chicago. Atcher died of cancer at Hospice & Palliative Care of Louisville at Audubon Hospital in October of 2002. |
