Notes |
This scene is near Abraham Lincoln's home in Hodgenville, Kentucky. This painting is by Fannie Porter Dickey, who was a poet and artist from Kentucky. She wrote "Blades of Bluegrass," which is a book of poems by Kentucky authors. She resided in Russellville and later in Glasgow, Kentucky before moving to Omaha Nebraska. She was married to Hon. Clem D. Dickey, a prominent lawyer. Fannie's mother, Elizabeth Porter, donated this painting to the Kentucky Historical Society in 1907. According the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, the acquisition of this painting began the Society's collection of modern art by artists of Kentucky: "In addition to these very interesting and historical pictures, Mrs. Morton will receive Mrs. Fanny Porter Dickey's famous painting, 'Beechwoods' for the Historical Rooms. It was from the celebrity this painting won that the late gifted artist and the writer was in beautiful compliment to her genius styled the "lady of the Beeches." This painting will begin the collection of modern art by artists of Kentucky. Competition is open for the honor of a picture in the Historical Rooms to all Kentucky artists." |
