Notes |
These identification tags were issued to and used by Captain John S. Schwab (1892-1971), grandfather to Howard Hunt, the donor. Schwab was working as a butcher in Louisville in 1910. On November 10, 1915, he married Anna Mae Kelly in Louisville. He joined the Kentucky National Guard in June 1916, transferred to the US Army in May 1917 as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. In Europe, he was camp commandant in a prisoner of war camp. He was discharged in October 1919 then joined the regular US Army in July 1920. He held the rank of captain in 1929 when he, his wife Anna, and their two children went to Manila, Philippines with a number of other military families, assumable to be stationed there. Schwab retired sometime before 1940. Despite being the age of 50, Schwab registered for the WWII draft in 1942; the draft card reporting him as a retired US Army officer. In 1949 he was working as an accountant in Louisville. Schwab died November 5, 1971, and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Louisville. |
