There is a red sheet iron hopper with a wire reinforced rolled rim. The base of the hopper is repaired with riveted galvanized sheet metal. There is a shaft running through the base of the hopper that connects to a flywheel and main take off drive pulley on one side and the steel grinding wheel assembly and elevator takeoff pulley on the other. There is duct tape wrapped around the main takeoff. The red enameled wooden sacking elevator assembly is bolted to the frame and hopper. There is a hinged cleanout hatch on the top middle of the elevator. There are chain driven paddles on the interior with the bag holding fixture on the exit chute. The belt connects drive pulley of elevator to the secondary takeoff pulley. There are three original grease fittings on the shaft. Accessories include (b) unknown steel bearing fitting; (c) red sheet iron hopper attachment with hatch for feeding shelled corn; (de) pair of steel grinding wheels which fit inside one another; (f) steel frame bracket to secure grinder to side of barn. |
Notes |
Used on the Fred and Hub Lucas farm outside Georgetown in the 1930s. By the 1860s, farmers knew that ground cattle feed was more palatable and nutritious. By 1900 a variety of models were available and most farms had one. I-H introduced its first feed grinder in 1909 and featured several labor saving features like the sacking elevator. |
