This is a navy blue cotton canvas saddle towel with a white "4" and "SPECTACULAR BID" in velcro backed letters. It is machine stitched. |
Notes |
A saddle towel was used under the racing saddle to protect the horse and show the owner's colors. Worn by Spectacular Bid to win the Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington in 1979. Spectacular Bid was born at Buck Pond Farm near Lexington, Kentucky owned by Madelyn Jason and her mother, Mrs. William Gilmore. The horse was sold as a yearling to Harry and Teresa Meyerhoff of Hawksworth Farm, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. He won the 1979 Kentucky Derby and Preakness States and finished third in the Belmont Stakes, ridden bv Ronnie Franklin. |
