Description |
This lithographed theatrical poster features the dream scene in Richard III. The dramatic image features tent flaps spread open to reveal actor Thomas Keene playing the role of Richard III. Richard lies sleeping restlessly in chain armor on a couch. Four figures reach out to him from a cloudy light in the back of the tent (his brother, his brother's two sons, and Richard's wife, all of whom he has had killed in the play). Below the image is inscribed "TENT SCENE AS PLAYED BY THOs. W. KEENE IN RICHARD III." The maker "SHOBER & CARQUEVILLE LITH. CO. CHICAGO, IL." is in the lower right corner of the image. The theatre bill with dates and location that was attached to the bottom is torn off. |
Notes |
Thomas Wallace Keene (1840-1898) was a New York actor who toured various Shakespeare productions nationwide between 1880 and 1898. The poster was deaccessioned by the Speed in 1991 and transferred to the Kentucky Historical Society in 1997. |
