Description |
This is a stoneware butter churn. There is white glaze on the inside and out. The bottom and the rim was left unfinished. It was thrown on a pottery wheel in a barrel shape. It has a slightly flared mouth with an internal shelf to hold the lid. It has an applied ear shaped handle below the mouth on one side. It also has an applied grip near the base on the other side. There is a blue stencil on one side of an Indian head surrounded by stars. The lid is a round piece of unfinished wood. The wood paddle has a dowel handle and lap mortised wooden cross on the bottom. |

Used by Mary Minter Bailey (8/13/1881-8/13/1974) of Green Hall in Jackson County. It was passed down to Bailey from her mother. She used it to make butter for sale from her home to her neighbors. Mary was married to James Bailey (1871-1945). |
