Tobacco inserts were items placed inside tobacco packaging, sometimes they were packed inside the container with the tobacco and usually put inside an envelope. American tobacco companies began the use of silk insert from 1906-1910 and ended the practice at the beginning of WWI. The use of silk inserts instead of cards or other materials was used as a marketing strategy aimed toward women. The inserts were varied and colorful, and another marketing strategy for the companies was to distribute literature about home uses for the inserts such as creating quilts, throws, pillows, table covers, purses, and curtains from them. |
