Notes |
The items in this collections relate to or were used by Lt. Col. Manlius Rupert "Bud" Stewart (1909-1987). Born in Carter County, Stewart began serving in the United States Army in the 1940s. A member of the Army Corps of Engineers, Stewart was involved with the construction of the Alaska or Al-Can Highway. He commanded the 1680th Engineer Intelligence Division (1944-1945) and was part of the occupation authority in Japan after World War II. Stewart retired from the military in 1962. Donated Bud Stewart's sister, Elise S. Dysard. The Kentucky Department of Library and Archives holds some of Stewart's papers. These were worn by Stewart in Canada and Alaska while building the Highway in 1942. They were the only things that keep your feet dry and warm the regular Army boots not being good enough. The donor remembers Stewart coming home once during this time and says he got off the train wearing these moccasins. |
