This is a print of Andrew Jackson. Jackson is seated with an open book face-down on a table. He has white hair and is wearing a black frock coat, vest and shirt with upturned collar and carvat. He holds a pair of eyeglasses in his left hand and his right hand rests on the table. A sword and sword belt are hanging on the wall along with a pastoral scene in the background. There is an elaborate border of floral tracery with crossed flags and drums to the right and left of the portrait and images of the U.S. Capitol at the top and the Hermitage at the bottom. |
Notes |
Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) was the seventh president of the United States, serving from 1829-1837. The original work on which this print was based was painted in 1842 by John Wood Dodge. It became a postage stamp in 1863. Dodge was a minature painter and Danforth was an engraver of portraits and banknote vignettes. He founded the National Academy of Design in 1826. |
