Description |
This is a canvas gym bag with a brass zippered top opening and two plastic handles, one on each side. The bag features an arched top. It appears to have originally been blue, but the fabric has faded to tan in some places. There is a rectangular plastic patch, sewn along three of its edges, with the center cut out to receive a nametag. The bottom has four hemispherical steel feet. The bag is torn from the closed end of the zipper, horizontally across to the backside of the bag. |
Notes |
This item belonged to William "Bill" Caskey. He boxed while in the Navy, winning the 1949 championship for the lightweight division of the Mid-Atlantic Group. At the time, Caskey stood 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighed 125 pounds. After serving in the Navy, Bill Caskey returned to Kentucky. While living in Louisville, he boxed in the same boxing club as Muhammad Ali. There is no indication that Caskey ever fought Ali considering the weight class, but they may have sparred with each other. Caskey also played amateur baseball for a number of semi-pro teams. |
