Description |
This is a political cartoon by Hugh Haynie with the caption "O! Any Route Is Fine With Me--If It Leads to Frankfort in Sixty-Three." This is a printed drawing of a man meant to represent former Kentucky governor Albert Benjamin (Happy) Chandler - ABC. He is dressed like a witch and riding on a broomstick in front of a full moon. The brim of his hat has "HAPPY" written on the underside. He is barefoot and his robes are flying up to reveal hairy legs. He holds on to the broom with his right hand and holds a pumpkin in his left hand. The pumpkin has been carved onto a sad face jack-o-lantern and has a sign taped to it that reads, "PROGRESS IS SCARY!" There is a black cat with its back arched and tail raised that is tied by its feet to the broom. The cat has the word "BOO!" written on its side. A bat dangles below the broom and is tied on by a string around its neck. There is a bucket of what appears to be tar suspended from the broom with the words "SMEAR THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION!" written on it. "HUGH HAYNIE / The Courier-Journal" is written in white in the bottom left corner of the print. Below the print is the caption "'O! Any Route Is Fine With Me--If It Leads to Frankfort in Sixty-Three!'" There is handwritten text below this that reads, "For Ruth Murphy- / best wishes- / Hugh" |
