Description |
This tin Canteen is an example of an Union Army Bulls Eye pattern canteen with wool cover. The wool cover has faded to a khaki or light brown color. The piece has three tin loops for the strap and still has the original strap running through the loops. The strap has broken and it has been tied back together. The canteen has a metal spout at the top that extends about 1 inch above the body and is 1 inch in diameter. There is a stopper in the spout that is made of cork with a tin ring affixed to one end. There is a chain attached to the stopper and the cover is sewn on at the sides. |
Notes |
There is a paper label with an inked inscription which is difficult to read. Under UV light, it appears to say "...by Lieut. J.T. (or G) (illeg.)/ Co. D (illeg.) 44 (or 49) Va. (or Vol.)/...rendering at (illeg.) R". |
