Description |
This certificate of deposit receipt was circulated as money. It is from the August Savings Bank in Augusta, Ga, issued December 2, 1861. It is printed in black and blue ink with red overprint on beige paper. At center top is the image of a cannon with decoration around it. On the left edge is a vertical line with leaf decoration around it. Inscribed on the top edge is "CERTIFICATE OF DEPOSIT." On both sides of the cannon image is a large red number "10." Below ithe cannon is inscribed "AUGUSTA SAVIGNS BANK. (red ink) / B. Conley has deposited in the Bank, (black) / TEN CENTS. (red) / Payable on demand in currency. (black)." The date is in the lower left corner and the signature of the bank president is in the lower right corner. The reverse is printed with the short ends as top and bottom. It is inscribe in blue ink in a variety of fonts "MANAGERS / of the / Augusta Savings Bank! / W, W, Alexander._ / E P CLAYTON / T. W. chichester, / H, H. CUMING. / B. Conley / H H Hickman / F LAMBACK / G; F; McCay; / F. Phinizy / H. F. RUSSELL / M. P STOVALL / J B Walker / J! W! WALKER!." There is a decorative line between this and the next inscripiton in blue ink "By an Act of the Legislature of Georgia, / approved Dec. 17th 1861, the private property / of the Stockholders was made _iable for the / redemption of the certificates that had been / issued by this Bank." |
