Description |
This dough bowl is a roughly carved rectangular piece of wood. It is carved out in the shape of a long trough. Two handles have been carved at each end of the bowl. One handle has a drilled hole for hanging the bowl. The sides of the bowl taper to a narrow flat bottom. Inscribed on one side are the initials "CV." The inscription on the bottom reads "1760 D. Boon." |
Notes |
A bread maker used a dough bowl to knead the mixed ingredients together and allow the bread to "rise" as the yeast took effect. Wood was a preferred material, as it retained heat, which accelerated the action of the yeast. This bowl, marked "D.Boon 1760," has no other history of ownership connecting it to the famous frontiersman (1734-1820). In the mid-20th century, the Historical Society collected a number of items attributed to Boone, most of which have no better stories than this object. His reputation for carving his name on trees during his travels possibly inspired copycat efforts to increase the value of collectibles. |
