Notes |
These saddle bags were used during the American Civil War by Colonel William Thompson Scott (1833-1875). Scott was born in Lexington, Kentucky, the son of Mathew and ?? Scott, President of the Northern Bank of Kentucky. At the outbreak of the Civil War, and in violation of the state's official neutrality, Scott was appointed Lt. Colonel in the 3rd Kentucky Infantry under Thomas Bramlette. Scott assumed command of the regiment after Bramlette resigned in 1862. The 3rd was a well-traveled unit that fought at Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, and was with General Sherman's march across Georgia in 1864. By early December 1862, Scott resigned his position and returned to Kentucky to serve as Paymaster General of Kentucky. He was part of the Kentucky delegation to Abraham Lincoln's funeral in Springfield, Illinois in April 1865. Scott married Mary Yoder Brown in 1865, the daughter of Judge Mason Brown, owner of Liberty Hall in Frankfort and lived much of the rest of his life there. The donor was their daughter, Mary Mason Scott (1867-1934). |
