Description |
This is a metal trail marker for the "Boone Trail Highway". It is a cast iron sign with an image of a seated Daniel Boone in relief. He is holding a long rifle in his right hand and a hat in his left. A hound sits beside his left knee. |
Notes |
Created by J. Hampton Rich (the donor) of Mocksville, NC. to commemorate Daniel Boone. Rich was a "Good Roads" advocate and was interested in keeping Boone's memory alive. He placed these markers at sites associated with Boone and many others that were not. The inclusion of metal from the U.S.S. Maine (sunk in Havana in 1898 and salvaged in 1914) was intended as a publicity move. |
