Description |
This is an M1951 field cap also known as the Ridgeway cap. It is khaki with cardboard brim and top, and fold up, thin fleece earflaps. |
Notes |
Mr. Sowers, a native of Georgetown, served in the US Army in 1962-63 as a tank crewman. He was drafted and sent to Fort Knox for basic training in 1962. Sowers was then transferred to Fort Benning, GA. Records show that he served in HQ Co, 4th Btn, 69th Armor Brigade, Third Army. His unit was called up during the Cuba Missile Crisis and was sent to Fort Stewart, GA. There they waited three weeks for the decision to invade Cuba. According to the donor, they were not allowed contact with the media and had to remove all insignia. After three weeks, they returned to Fort Benning. |
